Barri Blauvelt is Adjunct Faculty, Institute for Global Health, at the University of Massachusetts and also is CEO of Innovara, Inc. a global health care consultancy company. Her role at the IGH is mainly conducting qualitative studies involving medical, policy and advocacy developments globally.
In 2009, she was invited to join the US President’s Cancer Panel. In October, 2009, she presented and submitted a white paper to the Panel on “Ethnicity of Cancer: Global Learnings and Implications for US policy” (now archived by the NIH). In March/April 2010, she helped facilitate and then develop the final consensus publication and recommendations, Improving Cancer Care in the Arab World presented at the Pan-Arab Conference 2010 (Algiers) and and adopted by the WHO in May (www.ICCAW.org). In July, 2010, she presented on “The Future Epidemic: Obesity, Diabetes and Cancer” at U. of Massachusetts, and with coauthors from USA, EU, Latin America and Asia, is preparing for publication in 2011.
Some studies she is currently conducting or has conducted in collaboration with colleagues at U. of Massachusetts as well as other leading schools of public health and medicine (Johns Hopkins, Cleveland Clinic, Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham & Women’s Hospital, MD Anderson Cancer Center, University of Virginia, et al) have mainly involved cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, infectious disease, endocrinology, rheumatology, ophthalmology, and pulmonology.
In addition, she is the author of Powerful Medical Presenter, a medical presentation skills curriculum developed for Harvard faculty at Massachusetts General Hospital, and is co-author of From Clinical Research to Publication and co-instructed with leading faculty from Johns Hopkins University Medical Institutes.
She also is Chair of Women in High Places, the exclusive network of the 200 highest ranking women in health care medicine, policy, advocacy and industry in the world, with particular focus on cancer and diabetes.
Raised and educated internationally (Asia, Canada, Europe, US), Mrs. Blauvelt worked in international patent and trademark law with a leading global intellectual property firm out of New York City, and held managerial positions with Exxon Corporation, Pfizer and American Cyanamid, eventually rising to become responsible for Asian and then global commercialization of Lederle and Davis & Geck Divisions. She has held positions as Chair of the US/China Trade Commission (in cooperation with US and PRC governments). She also founded and leads Innovara, Inc. a leading company in global medical thought leadership development.
Mrs. Blauvelt has a BA degree in international education and pre-law from Hampshire College. She holds an MBA from the Graduate School of Business, Columbia University in New York City, where she also studied law and post-doctoral level Management Sciences.
